Youth organizing at the dawn of a post-Hibakusha nuclear disarmament movement

| Data collection method: | Oral history interviews with youth anti-nuclear activists conducted in Japan and Canada. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling when they met the following inclusion criteria: (a) affiliation with organisations partnering with the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) or the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA); (b) self-identification as part of a youth-led initiative; and (c) physical presence in Japan or Canada at the time of the interview. |
| Statement on legal, ethical and access issues: | "The study received favourable ethical approval from Keele University on 9 April 2024 and was conducted in accordance with UK GDPR and Oral History Society guidelines. Participants were informed of the purpose of the research, long-term archiving, and future public access before signing a participation agreement. All publicly accessible audio recordings and transcripts underwent a documented sensitivity review, with identifying information anonymised or access restrictions applied where necessary. Original recordings, signed participation agreements, editable transcripts, and sensitivity review documentation are retained in restricted-access folders and will remain closed for 60–100 years due to the presence of personal data. The collection is not released under a Creative Commons licence. In accordance with the deed of deposit, the repository's role as data controller is limited to the publication and dissemination of the collection. Any third party accessing or reusing the materials is responsible for establishing its own lawful basis for processing personal data and for complying with UK GDPR and other applicable data protection legislation. The collection is made available solely for legitimate research, educational, and public-interest purposes under the terms of the deposit agreement." |
